Lines and Traces

Entitled ‘Lines and Traces,’ this collection exemplifies my design process and is the culmination of my research into historical jewellery making techniques, their current application and materials. This research allows me to deepen my skills, whilst applying them to bring my design ideas to life.

In this collection I returned to using Argentium Silver, a material I had used some years ago. My previous concerns related to the manufacturing processes but I am now satisfied that recycled silver is used almost exclusively in the production of the improved alloy Argentium Silver 940. I believe that the unique characteristics of the metal, such as its excellent fusing capabilities, tarnish resistance, improved working properties and heat hardening abilities justify its use.

All pieces in this collection are made from Argentium 940 Silver and 18ct yellow Single Mine Origin (SMO) gold. I started using SMO gold in 2021, because of its traceability from mine to jeweller and the commitment of the company behind SMO Gold - Betts Metals - to environmental and social accountability with regard to local mining communities.

The design of this collection originates from visits to national and international museums and the viewing of historical and archaeological artefacts, such as ancient jewellery from Mesopotamia, especially the grave goods of Queen Puabi, Greece and cuneiform tablets. The beautiful lines, shapes and curves of the latter developed through drawings into golden lines and dots, with some resemblance to caligraphic writing.

My technical research on fusing and granulation led me to incorporate these into the design of the pieces in this collection. The necklace, as well as each of the other pieces, feature an array of curved golden and silver lines, some of them dotted with delicate, minute, and carefully arranged, clusters of gold granulation.

The chain of this necklace is composed of 325 hand-made fused silver rings, which I then wove together. The clasp and pendant echo each other in design and the clasp, though seemingly simple, is designed to achieve greater security against accidental loss.

The pieces will soon be added to my shop - for any inquires in the meantime, please do not hesitate to use the contact form below to send me a message. Always happy to help!
