Silver rings with HDPE discs. HBM108
This ring is part of the HDPE/HOPE series which re-uses HDPE plastic from a single-use milk bottle.
The pieces in this series are concerned with the environmental crisis and seek to question our perception of beauty & preciousness and its associations to materials such as gold and silver. They draw attention to the issue of ‘value’ attached to precious resources such as gold & silver and ‘single-use’ every-day items that are discarded and end in landfill, even though they are also made from a precious resource - oil. The pieces therefore aim to elevate the material plastic from waste to elegance.
The ring is very lightweight and sits - almost floats - beautifully on the hand. The translucency of the discs allows the shapes beneath to be partially seen. The ring is made from Argentium silver D-shaped wire, three HDPE plastic discs and a smaller silver disc, which are micro riveted together.
Materials: Argentium silver, HDPE plastic
Size of D-shaped wire: 1.5x3 mm; Size of HDPE discs: 2 with Ø 26 mm, one with Ø 30 mm
