This one-off, unique red and green silk braided Kumihimo necklace is part of my HDPE/Hope collection.

It made with a red and green silk braid and with an Argentium silver pendant & translucent white leaves. The leaves are made from re-used plastic of a plastic milk bottle. They bear the imprint Plant Trees to draw attention to the environmental crisis at present & the need for action.

The pieces in this series are concerned with the environmental crisis and seek to question our perception of beauty & preciousness and its associations to materials such as gold and silver. They draw attention to the issue of ‘value’ attached to precious resources such as gold & silver and ‘single-use’ every-day items that are discarded and end in landfill, even though they are also made from a precious resource - oil. The pieces therefore aim to elevate the material plastic from waste to elegance.

All parts of this necklace, including the silk braid, are made by myself in my studio. Kumihimo is an ancient Japanese technique for making silk braids. Here you can read more about this technique.
